Tri clamp COUPLINGS

Tri Clamp couplings are quick connectors used in the food, pharmaceutical, chemical, and biotechnology industries. The connection allows for combining different-sized process lines and components equipped with various ends. They are easy and quick to install and especially easy to keep clean. Therefore, the couplings are particularly suitable for demanding hygienic work environments. Consequently, the Tri Clamp connection is a very common type of coupling in food and beverage factories, such as breweries.

BENEFITS OF TRI CLAMP CONNECTIONS

Clean process lines and high equipment hygiene are mandatory in the food industry. Tri Clamp connections offer numerous benefits that explain their popularity in the food industry and their ability to meet stringent hygiene requirements.

Due to the design of Tri Clamp couplings, there are no crevices or gaps where food residues can easily accumulate, which could serve as a breeding ground for microbes. This makes these types of connectors very easy to clean, making them a practical and effective option for industries requiring high levels of hygiene.

The connectors are designed to be cleaned without disassembly, but thanks to their simple structure, disassembly is also quick and effortless when necessary.

MEASURING

It is important to choose the right size Tri Clamp coupling to ensure it functions effectively and as intended. The right size of the coupling is often determined using one of the following options. The inner diameter of the hose end can be conveniently measured with a caliper, which helps in selecting the right size hose barb for the coupling.

If there is a need to replace an existing flange with a new one of the same size, it is advisable to measure the outer diameter of the flange with a caliper. The size can easily be verified by comparing the gasket to the hose. The inner diameter of the gasket and the hose should be the same size.

INSTALLATION OF THE CONNECTION

Due to the quick-connect feature, the connector is very easy and fast to install. A Tri Clamp connector consists of two flanges/flanged ends/ferrules, a gasket, and a clamp. The Tri Clamp connection is installed using a flange connection. Often, a food-grade rubber, silicone, or Teflon gasket is used between the flanges. The connection is secured with a clamp, which is then tightened by hand.

Before tightening the clamp, it is important to ensure that the gasket is properly seated on the surfaces of both flanges. Once the gasket is in place, the clamp should be loosened to fit it around the ends of the flange. Both ends must be in the groove of the clamp before starting to tighten.

One of the most common mistakes in the installation of this connection is overtightening the clamp, which can damage the connection component. It is important to allow the gasket to perform its function and create a tight, leak-proof seal between the flanges without over-tightening the clamp. Over-tightening can cause excessive pressure on the connector and lead to the gasket bulging. In the worst case, this can cause damage to the connector or the gasket. To avoid excessive pressure that could lead to gasket bulging, the clamp should be tightened just enough to hand tightness. Under- or over-tightening may lead to the accumulation of bacteria.

TRI CLAMP TERMINOLOGY

Tri Clamp connectors are sometimes also referred to as Tri Clover connectors. However, Tri Clover has become known as a brand name/product name, whereas Tri Clamp is the actual generic term for these connectors. In colloquial terms, however, both terms refer to the same thing.
